When Rest Feels Illegal

Why we resist softness.

Somewhere along the way, we were taught that stillness is wasted time. That naps are for the weak, vacations are indulgent, and “earning your rest” is the only way to deserve it.

But what if that story isn’t true?

Rest is not laziness. Rest is resistance in a culture addicted to hustle. Rest is a radical act of self-trust. It’s the quiet reminder that we are human beings, not human doings.

Think about it—your body never asks permission to breathe. Your heart doesn’t wait for productivity before it beats. Why should rest be any different?

When we avoid rest, we aren’t proving strength—we’re ignoring a sacred language our body is speaking. Exhaustion is not a badge of honor. It’s a call to pause.

So maybe this week, the invitation is simple: give yourself permission to rest without earning it. Lay down without apology. Close your eyes in the middle of the day. Drink tea slowly instead of rushing.

Because rest isn’t illegal. It’s necessary.

Reflection Prompt:
Where in your life does rest feel undeserved, and how can you give yourself permission to soften?
